Book Review: The Martian

Screen Shot 2015-10-15 at 9.56.04 PM

When this book was over, I didn’t want it to end! I mentioned this book in my favorites, too.  It was smart, thrilling and laugh out loud funny. Parts of this book had me biting my nails in suspense. Other parts I was crying since I was so connected to the Martian character, Mark.

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was lost in the story and hooked from page one.

If you don’t know, here is a brief overview of the plot. NASA sends a group up to Mars and they encounter a sandstorm. The crew believes one man, Mark, is dead and leaves Mars. Turns out he is alive and the book is all about him surviving and trying to get home to Earth. It is so cool, because the part of the book where we hear/get to know Mark, it is by his journal entries that he is logging in case he doesn’t make it. We get to learn about his farm, his food rationing, his journeys and mishaps.

Honestly, you need to read this one people!

Did you read this book? Any thoughts?

Review: Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo

The saga of dry shampoo continues

Is it weird if I start this review off with a negative? This cap is so hard to get on the bottle when you’re done. So, I never full put it on…and it always falls off! It’s a silly negative, but a con nonetheless.

This dry shampoo retails for about $6, full price. I believe I found mine at T.J.Maxx, so it was most likely a tad cheaper than that. The smell is purfumey, almost floral. I did not find it fresh. It worked well, but was a tad heavy. Also, I noticed this made my hair feel dry, stiff almost.

I think this could work well in a pinch, but not my favorite. Dry shampoo is all preference and this one has lots of good reviews out there.  On Ulta.com for example, out of 436 reviews, this has 3.7 stars. That is pretty good! Could be that, unlike most things, I am very picky about dry shampoo. Do you like this brand’s dry shampoo?

Until next time, plant nothing but love.

Emergen-Zzz

IMG_9278It’s that time and you need to get ready for bed. Then BOOM! The stress of needing to fall asleep sets in and there are you at 3 AM wide awake when you need to be up at 4:30 AM. I struggle with sleep lately and picked this up from the drugstore. It was about $12 at Longs, which seemed comparable to other places that sell it.

Back of Box

I mixed one packet with 4 oz of water about an hour before bed. I was in bed reading and felt the relaxation kick in. This product has melatonin, so that is what aids in the sleepy feeling. I felt amazing when I woke up the next morning.

The taste was lovely, a nice berry flavor. I am a fan of the regular Emergen-C products, so I was pleased when this one seemed to work for me as well.  I am not a doctor!  Not even a little bit, so this is just something that seemed to work for me after doing my own research online.  I recommend researching all options before you decide to try a supplement since everyone is different.

  • Prime!
  • Using a big fluffy brush, apply Moulder all over the lid up to brow.
  • Using a MAC 217, or something similar, apply Noble to crease.
  • Using the same 217, pick up Dark Wave and stamp in outer V, then drag it through the crease.
  • Repeat the two previous steps until desired look achieved.
  • Using a shadow brush, add Skulls to the inner half of the lid.
  • I added a blue KVD eyeliner here (in Nerdrum), but feel free to add it, leave it, whatever!
  • Add Dark Wave to the lower lash line.
  • Double check you inner corner highlight (I’m a big fan of this if you couldn’t tell) using Skulls.
  • Mascara.
  • Done!

Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Look 3: Colorful Concert Challenge

Concert night! I brought this palette to my husband and asked him to pick a color. He picked three colors that he didn’t think would go together. It ended up really cool!

Challenge accepted!

**Update: as I am posting my review, I notice that this actually looks similar to the Dark Wave (left) look on the face chart. I’m telling you, this palette and I were meant to be.**

How I got this look:

  • Prime!
  • Using a big fluffy brush, apply Moulder all over the lid up to brow.
  • Using a MAC 217, or something similar, apply Noble to crease. I went back several times to be sure this was really deep.
  • Using the same 217, pick up Analogue and apply to crease. Be sure to pat this in the outer V as well, blending it all together. Blend, blend, blend.
  • Use a shadow brush and apply Fran to the inner half of the eye. Go back and forth between the orange and yellow to be sure these are blended nicely.
  • Deepen up the crease by adding Vox then using Analogue to sweep in crease.
  • …yes, lots of blending…
  • Line waterlines, tight line, add wing (if desired).
  • For bottom lash line, place brown liner across outer two thirds. Pick up small blender brush with Lemmy and smoke that out.
  • I then sprayed fix+ on a liner brush and when back to stamp in more Lemmy. I wanted this green to POP. Let it dry and then use that same small blender brush to smoke out.
  • Highlight the inner most part of the eye with Legend.
  • Mascara.
  • Done!

Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Look 2: Daytime

Super simple look here for the second look of Mi Vida Loca palette week!

This was a look I wore to work one day. It is neutral and wearable for any time: day or night! The little pop of coral on the eye makes me feel like I am still having a little fun while being work appropriate.

How I got this look:

DSC_0235

  • Prime!
  • Tight line
  • Using a “C” brush add Harpsichord to the lid, leaving the most inner corner blank. Sweep to be sure this is blended in a natural way.
  • Using the other side of the same brush, use Lyric to brighten the inner corner.
  • Add small line of brown gel liner (if desired).
  • Mascara
  • Done!

Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Look 1: Purples

Alrighty! Look 1 here we go!

Purple is my favorite color, so it should come as no surprise that this is the color I went to play with first.

  • Using a big fluffy brush, apply Moulder all over the lid up to brow.
