Review: Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash (…And Possible Dupe)

Have you see the new mascara from Benefit Cosmetics? I got a sample from Sephora and YES! Roller Lash is so nice! Let me admit something.  I am a huge fan of Benefit’s mascaras.  They’re Real is one of my top favorite mascaras ever.

It’s time for…Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara versus Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. Let the games begin! Ok- that was a tad dramatic. But really, before we get too into this review, let’s get the general overview, side-by-side with a possible dupe.

  • Roller Lash is a sample size, but the full size looks pretty similar.
  • Lash Sensational shown in full size.

  • Roller Lash: $24
  • Lash Sensational: $6.99

Permanent Item?

  • Roller Lash: Yes
  • Lash Sensational: Yes

Color Options

  • Roller Lash: Seems black, only 1 option
  • Lash Sensational: Blackest Black, Brownish Black, Very Black

Waterproof Option?

  • Roller Lash: No
  • Lash Sensational: Yes. Brownish Black, Very Black

  • Roller Lash: dry
  • Lash Sensational: wet (you can almost see that in the picture below)

Initially, what made me think of this as a dupe was the brush. They seem to be so similar. As you can see in the close up, they both have that unique shape with one end having short hooks (as Benefit describes them) for what is supposed to grab and curl as you apply. Benefit notes their brush is patent-pending so there is a difference that is unbeknownst to me with the brushes. They seem very similar.

IMG_7206The one main difference I noticed was the amount of product they pick up. They apply similarly, fanning the lashes as you pull up. However, the Maybelline mascara is more wet of a formula and also seems to have a lot more product on the brush so it does clump if you don’t brush it out or apply with thin coats.  The Roller Lash I didn’t really have to do that with.

The other big claim of the Roller Lash is that it gives you a long lasting curl. I can’t speak to this much as I have a natural curl in my lashes.

So, is it a dupe? The Roller Lash is AMAZING. I will not deny that. I love benefit mascaras so that wasn’t too much of a shock that this was a huge hit. Both of these mascaras separate and provide lots of volume. While they aren’t exactly alike I did notice a lot of similarities between the two. There are a lot of great mascaras on the market both high-end and at the drugstore. I don’t think either will beat out my holy grails (They’re Real and The Rocket – funny they are Benefit Cosmetics and Maybelline respectively), but these are super nice options.

Until next time, plant nothing but love.

  1. Good Morning JoJo~

Hope you are well and congrats again on your double Masters. You are amazing!

So, do both the Maybelline mascaras have particles in them, like for lash lengthening? With contact lenses, I try to stay away from that, but your lashes always look so fabulous that I’d like mine to look similar, sans particles. I use Maybelline (Great Lash, not waterproof, Blackest Black) anyway because of it’s affordability and reliability, but sometimes would like to try something new.

Thanks for your blog, always interesting and I’ve turned a couple of friends on to you.

    Lots of Love, ~Aunt Lorraine

    1. Aunt Lorraine!!! Many Mahalos, feels SO GOOD to be done!!!

Yes, I believe the Maybelline claims to lengthen lashes, but there aren’t fibers in them to actually “paint” on the length. I agree, sometimes those particles make it tough for us contact wearers. The great lash is a CLASSIC, that also does a nice job at lengthening. The Maybelline in the yellow packaging is also pretty great at lengthening as well. They have such great mascaras, and you are right about the price being right. Can’t beat it. LOVE YOU!

  2. Nice review! Have you heard of this 3D fiber mascara from Younique? I’m totally in love! The fibers are 100% black green tea fibers and you use it with their gel. It is $29, but it gives you the volume and length plus it has totally eliminated my need for a curler (no joke check out my blog and video here: Plus it lasts you 3+ months and comes with a bitchin case! No smudging! This stuff is awesome (and if it doesn’t work out you can get a full refund no questions if returned within 14 days, 80% refund after 30-90 days)!

  3. I actually bought the Maybelline one recently but only tried it once, you are right about the brush holding a lot of mascara, I got all clumpy, maybe ill give it another try. My favorite everyday mascara is also Maybelline, its the full and soft one. I love it. I find that I don’t like mascara when I first open it, its always too wet, I need to use it a little bit and let it dry up a little before I really start to like it. You should definitely review the Younique mascara, I’ve heard about it and am wondering if its worth the $29!

    1. I heard a tip from Wayne Goss once where he said to wipe off the brush two or three times on a paper towel (or something like that) when the formula is really wet. Try that! Although, that could seem a little wasteful. Let it dry out too, that will help. For sure. Yea, so curious about the Younique now!
