Review: Maybelline Color Molten Shadow

Here I am, just perusing the Yahoo! Beauty feed when all sudden something catches my eye. The sentence that caught my eye was where the journalist said; “the subtle Molten formulation is kind of turning me into a believer.” Can this new eye shadow be that good? You see where this is going.   I saw this article…I had to investigate.

Oh!  These colors are so pretty!  The duos come in lots of color options: pink, taupe, teal, even navy.  Lots of potential here. I picked mine up for $6.99 at Target, pretty average price. I picked up #306: Rose Haze.  The packaging is kind of cheap, but hey, doesn’t bother me.  So far so good.

In the first swatch below, I used my finger.  I was excited because the texture did feel really smooth just like the article notes. This swatch shows two passes.  I was really disappointed because, as you can see, no pigmentation. It was worse in person!

Below in the next swatch, vertically on my arm I swiped the right side with a primer. The left side has no primer.  I wanted to see how these would apply over a primer with a brush since that is most likely how you would be using these.  Below I dipped back for product twice. Same as the finger swatch above, no pigmentation.  And, they pretty much fell right off.

Needless to say, this was a total flop for me.  There are so many good options for shadows at the drugstore that offer pigmentation and staying power.  In my opinion, these are a skip.  In fact, I returned the product.

Have you tried these?  Did you have a similar experience?

What’s in my Gym Bag?

So, let me just say that I try, TRY, to workout 3-4 times a week. So, when I go to the gym here are my must haves to bring.

Screen Shot 2015-05-27 at 7.57.01 PM

  1. Headband – At the very least bring a hair tie; if you are like me you will need both!
  2. Headphones – This is important so you can tune out all the noise. I find it easy to get distracted at the gym and people watch a lot.  You might be asking why there are two pairs in that little pouch.  And I have no idea!  Just happened that way.
  3. Gum – I always chew gum at the gym…is it just me…

IMG_7715

  1. Water – Duh. If I forget my water bottle I will usually buy something there, some type of beverage.
  2. Phone – You need to play some jams to keep you going. Thank you Spotify.
  3. Kindle – I either use my phone or actual kindle. I bring this with me everywhere because it is such a compact size.
  4. Towel – This is a must! Especially on those yoga or spin days.

So that is really all I bring. I don’t ever go anywhere after the gym, so I can clean up and get ready at home. I keep it pretty simple.

A nice pair of sneaks is a must, too.  I just got these at the Reebok outlet store recently.  Nice and new, ready to be broken in.

And lastly…don’t forget to check out the view on the way home…Something as simple as pretty clouds can change your mood.  Look up people!  So much to see!

What do you keep in your gym bag?

Review: Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash (…And Possible Dupe)

Have you see the new mascara from Benefit Cosmetics? I got a sample from Sephora and YES! Roller Lash is so nice! Let me admit something.  I am a huge fan of Benefit’s mascaras.  They’re Real is one of my top favorite mascaras ever.

IMG_7204

It’s time for…Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara versus Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara. Let the games begin! Ok- that was a tad dramatic. But really, before we get too into this review, let’s get the general overview, side-by-side with a possible dupe.

   IMG_7205

Packaging:

  • Roller Lash is a sample size, but the full size looks pretty similar.
  • Lash Sensational shown in full size.

Price

  • Roller Lash: $24
  • Lash Sensational: $6.99

Permanent Item?

  • Roller Lash: Yes
  • Lash Sensational: Yes

Color Options

  • Roller Lash: Seems black, only 1 option
  • Lash Sensational: Blackest Black, Brownish Black, Very Black

Waterproof Option?

  • Roller Lash: No
  • Lash Sensational: Yes. Brownish Black, Very Black

Formula

  • Roller Lash: dry
  • Lash Sensational: wet (you can almost see that in the picture below)

 IMG_7207
Initially, what made me think of this as a dupe was the brush. They seem to be so similar. As you can see in the close up, they both have that unique shape with one end having short hooks (as Benefit describes them) for what is supposed to grab and curl as you apply. Benefit notes their brush is patent-pending so there is a difference that is unbeknownst to me with the brushes. They seem very similar.

IMG_7206The one main difference I noticed was the amount of product they pick up. They apply similarly, fanning the lashes as you pull up. However, the Maybelline mascara is more wet of a formula and also seems to have a lot more product on the brush so it does clump if you don’t brush it out or apply with thin coats.  The Roller Lash I didn’t really have to do that with.

The other big claim of the Roller Lash is that it gives you a long lasting curl. I can’t speak to this much as I have a natural curl in my lashes.

So, is it a dupe? The Roller Lash is AMAZING. I will not deny that. I love benefit mascaras so that wasn’t too much of a shock that this was a huge hit. Both of these mascaras separate and provide lots of volume. While they aren’t exactly alike I did notice a lot of similarities between the two. There are a lot of great mascaras on the market both high-end and at the drugstore. I don’t think either will beat out my holy grails (They’re Real and The Rocket – funny they are Benefit Cosmetics and Maybelline respectively), but these are super nice options.

To be honest, I was hesitant to buy this. It got a lot bad reviews! Honestly, I love it. This will be a third in my top three. Ok, it is not crazy pigmented and that is what people were saying in reviews. For pale girls like me that is the best in a bronzer. This looks really dark in the pan but it applies light and looks natural on pale skin. You can build this up to a sun kissed look.  However, due to the not-so-pigmentedness (I made that term up, you’re welcome), if you have a deeper skin tone this most likely will not work for you.

Lip Products

DSC_0895

Top: Lipglass Hot/Cold ($16.50)

This can we worn on its own or layered over another lipstick (like Steam Heat). This is such a nice gloss! Packs a lot of color to give you a beautifully glossy red lip! Pucker up, indeed!

 Middle: Lipstick Steam Heat ($17.50)

A nice tomato red lipstick for summer. Honestly, I think anyone could wear this color. It is such a true red, but not as BOOM as some other reds out there. Classic. This is my other favorite.

 Bottom: Lipstick Tumble Dry ($17.50)

Hm. This is a tough one for me. The color is a light coral, applied very smooth and lightly. You can apply thicker for more coverage or light for a lighter look. At first I didn’t like this, I don’t usually wear really light peach lips like this. BUT, this is a nice color if you like this look. At first I thought I would return this…but this could be a nice daytime color to add to a dewy look.

Did you pick up anything from this collection?  Did you like it?  Overall, I am so pleased that I ordered stuff from this one.  I have passed on most of the limited editions lately from M.A.C, but this one is a total hit in my opinion.

Plan a “Me Day”

Opposed to what people think, living in Hawaii is not vacation all the time. We have work and other regular life duties just like everyone else!  Watch the first 5 minutes of The Descendents (with George Clooney) and he describes it perfectly.  The only difference is that vacation is a little more accessible here. See what I mean?

Life can get crazy sometimes.  Whether is work, school or children there are lots of reasons why we forget to put ourselves first. At least once in a while, remember to relax!
Today I took a day off. A day to relax and recuperate.  A me day!

First:  I took myself out to breakfast.  I went to my favorite crepe place.

IMG_7441Then, off to Target.  I got these slippers on sale for $9.00! And last, I went to the beach. Bring your book, sunglasses and beach chair.  These Hawaiian beaches can heal any problem.

And I am happy to report, I feel completely centered and rejuvenated. How do you spend a relaxing day?

Water…Easy Fix for Chapped Lips?

Lots of things can cause chapped lips and some are totally out of your control like weather and genetics. But what if there was a simpler solution?

 Water

img_7478

While I can say this has worked for me, I am not a doctor so I can’t say for certain this will work for everyone. One of the first places your body shows you that you’re dehydrated is your lips!  The average person is supposed to drink eight 8 oz glasses of water a day. If you don’t drink a lot of water, this might be something that could help your lips feel better.

Tips to drink more water:

  • I drink water all day long. Try to make this a habit.  Swap out sugary juices or sodas for a cup of water. One at a time!
  • For us, it helps that we have two Brita filters in rotation at any given time, so I am never low on freshly filtered water.
  • I have a cup (technically two that I rotate so one is always full, see picture above) that I drink out of with a straw. I don’t know why, but this makes is super easy to take sips here or there then before I know it the entire 32 oz bottle is empty and I am onto the next cup!
  • Keep track. If this is something that you really want to make a habit maybe give yourself a check mark with every glass you finish. If you stick to it, you will form a habit before you know it.

Stay hydrated people! Being hydrated is important to your body in general, not just for lip care.
