Anastasia Beverly Hills: Artist Palette

Two words:

  1. UNI
  2. CORN

I will not lie to you my friends, this unicorn shade was the reason I instantly wanted this palette. Unicorn is the star of this range for me and it is an indigo purple color with sparkle. The magic is so real, folks. Norvina was posting on Instagram about this and I knew that it had to be mine…MINE…MINES!

The packaging for the product is also really nice. There is a nice quality mirror included on the inside. Also, we get a cute little brush. Don’t hate on this brush, it isn’t bad! ABH1 ABH2As for the eye shadows, the quality is so great! This is my first try at the shadows from this company and they are working. They are pigmented perfectly, allowing for great blending and perfect pops of color. While you can do a full look with this palette, I would say that this would need to be supplemented with maybe a matte brown or your proper blending color. I used the aubergine color as a crease color and blended up to my brow with buttery; it worked quite well. However, if you were traveling with this I would recommend bringing a neutral palette as well. You are now equipped to conquer the world. YOU ARE WELCOME, WORLD.

PRICE:

The palette retails for $30, I bought mine from Sephora. For 12 high quality shadows and a nice two-sided brush…$30 is not bad. Think about it; let’s do the basic math. $30.00 / 12 shadows= $2.50 per shadow. Not bad! The naked palettes (which I love) are almost twice that in cost. Would I say opt for the Anastasia palette over a naked palette? No, obviously not. But, the price point is really not too bad in comparison to other higher end palettes.

COLOR SWATCHES

Full forearm of colors:

ABH3Top row:

Top to bottom shades are dusty rose, aubergine, anaconda, punch fuchsia, buttery, blue velvet

ABH4Bottom row:

Top to bottom shades are coal, unicorn, phresh, baby I’m a star, orange you fancy, beigelyABH5

Disclaimer: I swatched the shadows over a primer. I did this for a specific reason; I would never wear these sans primer. So why even try to use without a primer? It isn’t how I would wear them in my normal life. The primer I used was painterly paint pot and this is what I used 99% of the time.

Overall, there is no buyer’s remorse here. The colors offered in this palette are so unique and such high quality, I think you will enjoy. The Anastasia eye shadow palettes tend to sell out…so if you love this pop-of-color type palette, you best jump on it like it did!  I can’t wait to use unicorn in look soon.  Stay tuned for that!

Will you be getting this new palette?

Would you rock this: Purple Lip

Besides that owl in the Facebook Messenger app, purple is my spirit animal. Purple has always been my favorite color. I am talking all shades. Orchid, amethyst and eggplant…I love it all! I can’t explain it, but we have had a deep love affair for quite some time.

As I stated in a prior blog post, I love lipstick. I love playing with make-up in general, but mostly lips and the reason is very simple. If you change you lip shade, you change how you look. You could rock a straight nude and look completely different than if you rock an orange or hot pink lip. Pops of color on the lips is on trend lately and I took the opportunity to play around with purple.

Product: Electric Pressed Pigment Palette

Color: Urban

Fine: $49 (for full palette)

I tried this trend three ways. Two are proper lip products while one is not (obviously suspect 3 is not the proper lip product).

Verdict:

  • Suspect 1 yields a beautifully glossy lip that is so flirty you will make yourself blush.
  • Suspect 2 gives off questionably goth vibe, but still keeps it wearable since it is just on the border of too dark.
  • Suspect 3, honestly, was just for fun! This was way too high maintenance to be wearable at all. To apply this I applied concealer all over my lips then carefully drew in and pressed on the pigment. Unless wearing this for something very specific or just to have fun…this is neither practical nor long wearing as a lip product.

My theory on wearing lip colors: if you don’t like it then don’t look! The worst thing that can happen from wearing a fun lippie is that you decide you are glad you tried it and you can wipe it off. Or, you can save it for a fun Halloween costume. It ain’t permanent, girl! So, why not? You’ve literally got nothing to lose when experimenting with new lip colors.

V and me: Walkin’ and trash talkin’

I will be honest for the sake of transparency. I wrote this post a while ago…It is April now and I wrote this back in August. But it was a good post and the name was just too clever to not post.  OK!  So here we go.

We started our walk with this view:

IMG_5760Middle-of-the-week. The day when drinking entire pot of coffee does nothing but make you more tired. Does it get any worse? Between work, meetings and other sad adult like obligations it seems really hard sometimes to get out and get a walking. Thankfully having a buddy that is also walking helps! I went for a walk with a friend (who has since left HI for bigger and better things.  I swear I am not bitter.) so I will need to find a new walking buddy. I digress.

In Honolulu there is a nice beach park called Ala Moana. The best part about this is that all along the beach and around the park there is a paved sidewalk, which makes it PERFECT for those evening strolls. If you had time you could just keep looping around the beach. This is also a really nice spot for a sunset stroll because there is a great view of the sunset.

IMG_5761Anyway, back to midweek blues. It is so easy to just stay home in jammies watching reruns of The Big Bang Theory after a long day of work. I am trying to get on track with making new healthy habits. One of those is exercise. I am not talking about intense, lose 20 pounds in 10 days, do or die type workouts. Basically, I just want normal workouts to, you know, not be squishy and to be an all around more healthy person. Also, I want to hike koko head at some point in my life…so there’s that for motivation.

Walking has so many obvious benefits, but let’s just run over them.

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  • Strengthen your bones
  • Lift your mood
  • Improve your balance and coordination

One thing this list does not mention that walking with a friend is also great since it allows for quality time, but also motivation.

We ended our walk with this view:

There & Back Again: A JoJo’s Tale

My name is Johanna and I live in Hawaii. Every single day I get to see the teal ocean from my bed and smell that salty air. So how did this haole girl from New England get to Hawaii?

Let’s jump in.

I grew up in Connecticut.  I know what you are thinking, and yes, it is the exact opposite of Hawaii.  I grew up in a suburb where it takes 45 minutes just to get to a highway.  It was a wonderful place to grow up, but I always knew I wanted to see more.

I spent my first college semester in Boston and then I lived in Woodland Hills, CA, then moved back to CT.  I was settled to stay at least close to New England until I met someone who challenged me to become a better person.  One problem:  he lived in Hawaii.  So, you can probably see where this is going.  I traveled back and forth for many years, lived here, left, moved back.  For now, and probably for a little while, Hawaii is home base.

This is the view from my porch nearly every night:

So who am I?  I love animals (particularly dachshunds because their body makes no sense and they are just insanely good looking), glitter, coffee and experimenting with makeup.  I feel things hard and try to be unapologetic for who I am.  I am a work in progress learning everyday to find a balance between being tender and strong.  This blog will be a journey.  This blog will involve topics such as beauty, books, food and more.  This blog will be me.

Until next time, plant nothing but love.
